Project 52: Before & After | Week 17

April 24, 2020  •  5 Comments

I think we're on day 3,871 of staying at home but who really knows anymore? I do, however, know that today is Friday so that means another professional pet photography Project 52 blog post. Our theme for this week is "before and after." For this week's challenge, I took a picture of Lola from right after she was adopted as my before and did some special editing to get my after. I'm in quite a few pet photography Facebook groups and I kept seeing people posting pictures they converted to emulate watercolor paintings, some were better done than others. I already offer the option of digital paintings, but not a digital watercolor painting, so I thought I would give it a try.

Here is the before image.   My first attempt at doing the watercolor image was by using the "action" that was circulating in the Facebook groups. An action is a series of steps that are recorded and automated so you just have to hit play and let Photoshop do the rest. You can then edit various aspects of the image to customize. I let the really complex action run and then made some modifications of my own.

Here is step two: I wasn't really happy with the result as I thought the color palette could be improved, so I decided to start over and edit the image on my own using a different editing program and some other steps of my own.

Here is my third step:

I liked the color palette of my edit much better but I felt the image had lost some of the detail found in the first watercolor action edit, so decided to play around with both images and see what I could do with combining them.

My final step is a combination of the two previous edits and I like it much better overall: What do you think? Do you prefer the final image or one of the previous edits?

Let's see a little before and after with Kylee Doyle Photography, serving pet parents in the greater Sacramento area, and then head around the rest of the blog circle until you end up back here.

Lola is so adorable in her pearls and the last, combined image, is my favorite too! I think that's a great start for your first watercolor!

What a sweet little princess Miss Lola is. I love the last edit but I also like the softness of the second one.
