Project 52: Light - Silhouettes | Week 31

August 05, 2016  •  5 Comments

Week 31 of professional pet photography blog circle Project 52 sees us continuing our exploration of light with the theme of "Light: Silhouettes." As we have been doing all this year, we are covering lessons from "The Visual Toolbox: 60 Lessons for Stronger Photographers" by David DuChemin. I first attempted to take my images outside, but the Cincinnati summer weather is so unpredictable with the heat and humidity you just never know when a rain shower is going to pop up and my timing was totally off as the sky decided to get dark and cloudy just when Mr. Bojangles and I headed out for our photo shoot. So, instead I opted for plan B, once again, ended up in my home studio for our assignment. I'm actually really happy with my results, so am glad that I had to make the change.

First I started experimenting to see how I needed to position the lighting for my indoor silhouettes and while this image is not a total silhouette, I really liked it and wanted to share.

After taking a few more frames with moving my light and Mr. Bojangles to different positions, I finally came up with some total silhouette images. I did need to adjust Mr. Bojangles slightly darker in post production to get the final effect I was going for, but not by much.

You can see how moving the light or adding or subtracting another light can change not only the silhouette, but the background color.

And, since I was in the studio, Paco got to join in the project this week. When I'm shooting outside and working by myself, it's easier to just have Mr. Bojangles with me, so Paco misses out on participating in most of these experimental shoots. It's a good thing too, because this actually ended up being my favorite silhouette image, especially since I think you can really tell from it that Paco is a chihuahua.

Now, to see how my fellow pet photographers handled this week's silhouette challenge, head over to About A Dog Photography in St. Cloud, MN, and then around the rest of the blog circle until you end up back here.

If you would like to book a custom pet portrait session in your home or other favorite location, use the hot pink "BOOK NOW" button to the right of this post (at the bottom or your screen on mobile), send us an email to suzi [at] petlovephotography.com, or give us a call at 513-288-1650 in the Greater Cincinnati area or at 650-382-3242 in the San Francisco Bay Area.

LOVE the lighting in the 1st one especially - beautiful! Great job with this "in studio" - impressive!!! Paco has the perfect ears for a silhouette!

Paco is moving in on Mr. B's stardom rankings. I also loved that photo! The lighting in the first photo is wonderful!

Thanks, Kim. It was my favorite of my whole shoot, so I couldn't not share it!

Kelly, my studio is just a small area in my basement and I only use it for me and it only works because I have small dogs.

I'm glad you shared that first image, too. It's very cool! And, I have to agree that Paco wins this week. It's his slick coat. It's fun to see studio versions for these challenges I don't have one.
